Weather conditions: |
| A lot of snow fell during end of winter which resulted in record for the last years 95% snowcover in late May (data of polar station). Spring was late cold and prolonged; only in mid June temperatures reached the level of multiannual average and followed it then. Storms and rains were regular, but did not exceed normal values of frequency and intensity.

Breeding conditions:

Arctic Foxes were met almost daily in season beginning, with reduction to one record in few weeks by the season's end. Territorial pairs of Rough-legged Buzzards populated breeding habitats, but did not nest to major part (a single found nest with one egg was deserted in 3 days). A sole nesting pair of Arctic Skuas successfully raised chicks, while Pomorine Skuas were only represented by few nomadic flocks in early and mid June. Snowy Owls was seen once during the season. Waders started to arrive early in June and completed migration quickly. Nesting density of all species was similar to that in 1995 or slightly less, with exception of Ringed Plover that showed two-fold increase in suitable habitats along sea shore. Nesting synchrony was low: the gap in clutch initiation between different pairs of certain species reached 20 days. Judging by physiological condition of captured birds clutch loss due to adverse weather was unlikely. List of breeding waders included Dunlin, Little Stint, Temmink's Stint, Red-necked Phalarope, Ruff, Ringed Plover, Turnstone, Grey Plover, Dotterel, and probably, Common Snipe. Average nest survival was 57%, with a maximum in Ringed Plover - 82%. Generally, season was favourable for the latter species, and average for reproduction of other waders.
